
Adkins was raised by a single mother in several working-class communities of London. Adkins loved listening to modern pop music in her early years and learning how to play the clarinet and the guitar. She was introduced to Etta the mid-century rhythm and blues singer, in her teens and began to consider a career as a musician. As she learned in a secondary school for performing arts, which was funded by the federal government when a friend began uploading songs Adkins wrote on Myspace. Her work was quickly discovered by record labels and was signed a contract with XL Recordings in 2006.
